Veggie Pizza Miraflores Lima: Review

October 4, 2017

Our resident Lima foodie Jason Kearney recently went to Veggie Pizza in Miraflores. This is a popular eatery for both local Limeños and increasingly some tourists too. Here is his review of what culinary treats it has to offer the visitor.

Pizza Miraflores Peru

An Oasis of Delectable Veggie Pizza

Veggie Pizza was started by four brothers of the Melgar De La Puente family in Lima Peru. Its inception began in 2012 when one brother Mario, whilst abroad, had become 120 kg in weight from his junk food consumption. He was given just a few years to live, if he didn’t change his erroneous eating habits. The other brothers Miguel, Juan Francisco and Jose knew they had to help, and so faced with little choice they began to try provide healthy options at meal times. Over time they learned what worked and their increasingly famed dishes progressed from just Mario, to family and then to friends. The end result was in 2013 Veggie Pizza Miraflores Peru was born. Today they have three successful outlets based around the affluent Miraflores area of Lima, all based on wholesome fresh ingredients.

Miraflores is my home and I love to keep my finger on the pulse of Lima’s dynamic food scene and so a review of Veggie Pizza in Miraflores Lima was a must visit. They have three outlets scattered across the district and the one I chose to visit, with my family, is located in Calle Enrique Palacios 350, Miraflores. The touristic heart of Miraflores at Parque Kennedy is just a 5-10 walk to this Veggie Pizza outlet, and so no reason to not come try this authentic Peruvian Pizza.

The Veggie Pizza in Calle Enrique Palacios Miraflores is located inside a modern glass clad apartment block. The restaurant is built around a ground floor decorated in eye catching murals and a central free-standing wall of wine bottles with the ambiance continued into an upstairs mezzanine level. The restaurant seats about 50 people and was busy downstairs, we managed to get a table with lounge style seating beside the front window. The décor is chic and modern but also has rustic overtones in the tableware of wood and slate.

The Food

The core of this review of Veggie Pizza Miraflores Lima must be the food on offer and this did not disappoint. The friendly but busy waitress brought us our menus and a fine selection they offer. Our drinks consisted of a local red ale beer, a fresh strawberry juice and a cocktail based on pisco, the local liqueur, called Polen Punch. This cocktail was an amazing mélange of natural flavors, including fresh and zesty maracuyá passion fruit. It’s akin to the old expression of “an angel dancing on your tongue” and is assured to set your taste buds alight; go try it for yourself.

A choice of six starters is available ranging from Tomato Soup to Veggie Burgers to Artichoke hearts stuffed with pesto and cheese. We decided to skip these fine offerings as the mains pizzas are filling. For our main course we chose the Puesta del Sol pizza option. This consists of a thin base pizza complemented with pecan nuts, panela (unrefined cane sugar), orange, orange zest and cherry tomatoes. The pizzas come in individual or family sizes on the menus, but also the family size can be ordered as two halves which makes a convenient option for couples. The presentation is superb as the chef brought our pizza to the table, thin crispy base bedecked with subtle contrasting flavors of sweet panela and pecan, to tingling sunbursts of orange and cherry tomatoes on your taste buds, delectable.

Three desserts are offered; cheesecake, not cheesecake and chocolate cake. We tried two, a delicious “not cheesecake, this comes as a pie of creamed organic fruits on a bed of dried chocolate orange, lemon and passion fruit. The chocolate cake, a sublime dessert, is created with organic cacao chocolate, algarroba (carob tree) flour, fruit coulis sauce, fudge and all complimented by a flavorsome yummy caramel ice cream.

Prices

To Go or Not to go?

The only downside of this review of Veggie Pizza Miraflores Lima was on the customer service side. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, but overworked and somewhat confused as to the details of the menu. So, some room for improvement there.

This food review of Veggie Pizza Miraflores has seen that truly exceptional pizzas are on offer and their wholesome products are first rate. It is a venue that offers much in its quirky design, and the setting and location are excellent for tourists looking for good pizza in central Miraflores Lima. The chefs deserve special mention for creating unique, healthy and tantalizing dishes from simple foods.

You deserve to let your taste buds experience foods like no other. Do you remember the dancing angel?
