Altitude Sickness on the Inca Trail
  • KazKaz November 2010
Me and my husband are going to hike the Inca Trail in 2 months time, over Christmas. I am a little worried about altitude sickness, as I have heard that many people get sick on the trail. Should we be worried about this? What tablets do you recommend to prevent altitude sickness?

You should never start the Inca Trail until you are acclimitized!! Very few poeple get sick on the trail and those that do get ill have probably not taken time to acclimitize before the trek.

You need to arrive into Cusco before you start the trek, and take a few days to get used to the high altitude. Cusco is around 3,200 meters above sea level. I recommend 3 days minimum to get used to the altitude.

If you do this then you should be fine, and have no worries at all. As for altitude medication....talk to your doctor if you have concerns.
